Exercise therapy for psychological health and well-being
Exercise therapy is about using exercise to improve mental health and wellbeing. You may be surprised to hear that regular exercise can help you maintain a good level of mental health. In addition, it has been shown to help people with depression and schizophrenia as well as other conditions.
There are many reasons for this. Exercise brings about chemical changes in our bodies. It releases endorphins into the bloodstream which make us feel good. Exercise also boosts our self-esteem and provides us with a sense of empowerment over our own health.
The best thing about exercise is that there are no negative side-effects provided you are fit enough to start exercising. If you are in any doubt about your fitness, it is advisable to consult your GP before you start a new exercise programme.
