Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) are popular therapeutic approaches that we offer at our Newcastle centre.

CBT explores how we think and interpret situations and the impact this has on our feelings and behaviours. This type of therapy focuses on current difficulties and how they can be changed rather than looking to the past for the cause.

CBT aims to break down a problem into manageable chunks which enables small areas to be worked on at a time and for clients to see the impact of each change. This type of therapy is often of shorter duration than other ‘talking therapies’ such as counselling. This is because the client is expected to apply their new skills and techniques between sessions to make changes to their actions and thoughts.

Research has shown CBT to be helpful for a range of issues such as anxiety, low mood/depression, stress, phobias, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder to name a few. However, it's not suitable for everyone, particularly as clients need to apply the techniques themselves, and this isn't always appropriate.

MBCT is an approach that combines CBT with mindfulness meditation techniques. Click here for more about MBCT.
